Job Summary

As a member of the Distribution Operations team, the Power Line Technician is aimed at constructing, maintaining, and operating the overhead and underground electrical sub-transmission, distribution, and streetlight systems. Also, the Power Line Technician often responds quickly to all electrical emergencies, power outages, and system reliability issues.

They will need to have a working knowledge of relevant trades and a broad knowledge of Hydro Ottawa’s overall electrical system. Working as a power line technician in the company and an ambassador, you must have solid interpersonal skills to interact daily with customers, contractors, and other utility personnel.

Main Responsibilities 

As a power line technician, your essential responsibilities may include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:

  • You will construct, maintain, and operate electrical overhead and underground sub-transmission, distribution, and streetlight systems including distribution vaults. 
  • You will install, test, commission, maintain, and de-commission all medium and high voltage equipment. However, it’s not limited to insulators, conductors, transformers, regulators, re-closures, sectionalizers, capacitors, air break switches, circuit switches, fused cutouts, lightning arrestors, cable systems, and automated distribution switches.
  • Also, you may need to install primary and secondary metering equipment.
  • Furthermore, you will perform live-line work on overhead and underground systems.
  • As well as perform switching for maintenance, load distribution, and construction activities, while maintaining safe limits of approach.
  • Bond on to energized 27kv and 44kv conductors to perform live-line barehand work.
  • You will carry out inspection and safe operation of different vehicle and machinery types which include but are not limited to, insulated aerial devices and radial boom derricks. As well as off-road track machines, tension machines, cranes, step vans, cube vans, flatbed trucks, service trucks, pickup trucks, forklifts, and trailers.
  • Provide 24/7 on-call duties, based on a yearly schedule.
  • In addition, you will respond to emergency system conditions, perform diagnosis troubleshooting, and repair, and replace equipment. This is to ensure that there’s safe operation and restoration of power to customers. And also assist first responders by providing an electrically safe work area.
  • You will perform specialized emergency rescue techniques which include pole top rescue, bucket rescue, bucket evacuation, and confined space rescue.
  • Monitor, oversee, and ensure the safety of a vast range of internal/external trades and contractors to support ongoing construction and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and ensure project compliance with all internal and external safety standards and documentation. As well as with the Utility Work Protection Code, Ontario Reg 22/04, Hydro Ottawa Limited Construction Verification Program, Hydro Ottawa Technical Standards, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Ministry of Labor Notice of Projects, Ministry of Transportation Ontario Traffic Manual, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Regulations.
  • Responsible for short-term job planning, reviewing work packages, organizing work activities, adjusting to new developments, and reporting status to supervisors.
  • Apply for work protection, hold work protection permits for Hydro Ottawa / contractors, and perform switching orders as agents of the system.
  • Recommend new or improved methods and techniques to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, accuracy, and safety.
  • Analyze, read, interpret, and modify system maps which include detailed as-builts.
  • Complete and sign off on a variety of documents such as trouble reports, damage to plants, truck maintenance reports, CVP, and tailboards.
  • Train and mentor apprentices.
  • May be required by management to replace team leaders.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • You must obtain a Power Line Technician Program Diploma.
  • As well as a Power Line Technician Trade Certificate from the Ontario College of Trades or its equivalent.
  • Power Line Technician Journeyperson Red Seal Endorsement, or ability to obtain.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The English language is essential, both oral and written.
  • Bilingual (English/French) is also considered as an asset
  • Valid Driver’s License – Class AZ is preferable, Class DZ minimum.
  • Government of Canada secret level security clearance.

Selected candidates will require an above-average score on a standardized mechanical, mathematical, and reading comprehension assessment as an element of the selection process. Additionally, the terms and conditions for this job position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.
