Scope

Responsibilities

As a successful candidate, you will be required to perform various job functions, such as fire suppression activities and helping out at medical incidents. You will also assist with fire inspections, fire prevention education, community initiatives, and working with our communications professionals within the dispatch center. As well as other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements To Apply

• You must be legally entitled to work in Canada (You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident/Landed Immigrant).
• You must have completed grade 12 or its equivalent.
• Possess two years or more of accumulated work experience after completing high school.
• Obtain a valid Class 3 or Class 1 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement or equivalent for vehicles with more than two axles (automatic transmission is accepted). As well as a safe driving record.
• Possess a current BC EMA Licensing Board First Responder License or higher level of EMA License (EMR, PCP, ACP). However, we do not accept OFA licensing.
• Must be fluent in English (both written and verbal).
• You must be physically and psychologically suitable for the position of firefighter. (Meets NFPA 1582).
• Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, according to the Provincial Health Officer requirements for individuals who are working in the healthcare position.
• You must be willing to work 24-hour shifts, day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays including extra shifts as required.
• In addition, you must be available for short-term emergency callouts to meet business and operational needs. Employees must also live within Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley Regional District, no further east than Hope, no further north of Squamish, no further south than the USA border, and no further west than the Metro Vancouver coastline.
• You must have completed the Surrey Fire Service Basic Firefighting Knowledge Course* or its equivalent**

*The Surrey Fire Basic Knowledge Course is a course taken online and students often learn the knowledge required to be a firefighter. Students who require this qualification will be allowed to sign up for the course following the psychometric assessment review.

** Equivalency for the Basic Knowledge Course is considered to be applicants who have NFPA 1001, Level 1, Level 2 IFSAC, or ProBoard certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

These additional skills and experiences will help to improve your application but do not replace the required minimum qualifications:

Post Secondary Education: (select one)

• 30 post-secondary institution credits.                                                             
• Minimum of one year in an apprenticeship program (transcripts required).   
• Diploma.                                                                                                               
• Degree, or higher, or red seal certification.                                                       

Previous work experience in the hospitality industry (food service).                                                        

Previous work experience in: 

• One year minimum in Police, Fire, or Health Care.                                               
• Wildfire Service / Coast Guard / Lifeguarding.                                                  
• Military / Search Rescue.                                                                                  
• Other.                                                                                                                      

Previous work history with a non-profit organization.     

Experience in team-oriented, sports, or organizations.    

Sports coaching or instructional qualification.

When you decide to become a firefighter, it is triumphant in and of itself. Meanwhile, only a special person can pursue a career in public safety because you’ll most likely face dangerous situations frequently. Aside from all of that, becoming a firefighter demonstrates that you want to help people and are not afraid to work hard. 

Just like in any other career, you want to become successful and that requires being the best at what you do. Effective Communicator

Every firefighter must clearly and concisely communicate orders or needs to their teammates and patients. Orders may include instructing teammates through medical procedures during training or while on the job. Additionally, firefighters find themselves in challenging situations where they need to help patients remain calm in the event of an emergency. If a firefighter can communicate with someone in need confidently and calmly, their patient is more likely to abide by their orders.

Ability To Adapt Quickly

Throughout intense training, firefighters should learn to react and adapt in accordance to an emergency. If you’re at the fire station awaiting a call, you’re likely working on paperwork, learning something new, or maintaining tools and fire equipment. That said, when they receive a call, firefighters need the ability to drop whatever they were doing, get in their PPE quickly, and travel towards the emergency.
